Tarragona, the city of Publius Cornelius Scipio
Tarragona was founded by Publius Cornelius Scipio during the Punic Wars (218 BC). Its location made it a great Roman city called Tarraco, with a circus, an amphitheater, an aqueduct, a forum and walls, whose remains can still be seen.

A lot to see
Some of the most famous Roman emperors in history resided here, such as Augustus, Galba and Hadrian.
During the Middle Ages, the city acquired great fame and became the metropolitan headquarters of the Crown of Aragon. Its cathedral is the main witness of this.
Tarragona also bears the stamp of the modernist era, with works by Gaudí (Altar of the church of Jesus and Mary), Jujol (Metropol Theatre) and Domènech i Montaner (Mausoleum of Jaume I).
The city is also known for having hosted the Carthusian Fathers at the beginning of the last century, expelled from France in 1903, who took over the production of the Chartreuse liqueur in a distillery in the port area until 1989, when production resumed in France. Even today, the alcohol of the monks is still sold and consumed under the name of “Tarragona”.
Until a few years ago, Tarragona was a small and quiet residential town on the Costa Brava. Listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since November 2000, Tarragona has three facets: Roman, medieval and modern. With a more than attractive tourist offer, accessibility, beaches and gastronomy, Tarragona is a destination you can’t miss.
Thousands of places to discover, corners that only a few people know about and unique experiences.
Let an Official Guide show you Tarragona as you could never have imagined.
