A lot to see
White, golden or black, the sand on the beaches of Gran Canaria comes in different colors. One of the most beautiful beaches is Playa de Amadores. It is located in the south protected by the wind. In the 1960’s the construction and mass tourism boom began in Gran Canaria. But with the views of the sea and the heat in the feet on the warm sand, one quickly forgets the architectural misdeeds.
You will find dunes… Many dunes! Six kilometers of fine sand beaches stretch along the southern tip of the island. Behind them is a spectacular dune landscape, also known as the “Mini-Sahara”. Tourists like to walk here at night and enjoy the sunset from a sandy hill.
A rainbow flag flies over a section of beach in Maspalomas. Gran Canaria is also a popular destination for the gay community. Numerous LGTBI hotels serve this type of customer. Their meeting place is the Centro Yumbo in the Playa del Inglés resort. In this mall there are gay-friendly bars and drag queens shows. Once a year there is an LGTBI festival with parades and parties.
The promenade is a good place to walk and you can rent boats for excursions around the island. On one of the docks you can watch the fishermen as they count and sort their catch.
Artenara is the highest village on Gran Canaria. Many people still live in caves carved out of the volcanic rock. This is how the original inhabitants lived before the Spanish conquered the island in the 15th century. One of the oldest inhabited caves in Artenara is now a museum. Completely furnished, it shows the daily life of the time.
The Cathedral of Santa Ana is the heart of the old town of Las Palmas. Art, museums, theaters and concerts offer a rich cultural life. Carnival is celebrated two weeks a year, with magnificent costumes and long parties.
Gran Canaria is only one of several islands that make up the Canary Islands. Constant ferries and inter-island flights link the seven islands of the archipelago, which means you can easily see and experience everything that La Gomera, Tenerife, La Palma, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and El Hierro have to offer!
