A lot to see
Being a fairly small city, it is very easy to walk from one place to another, starting with a visit to the remains of the Punic Walls, continuing to the second largest Roman Theater in the Iberian Peninsula, enjoying the splendor of the Art Deco buildings and ending the day with a panoramic view of the city and the port on board a port cruise. In addition, lovers of everything maritime will be delighted with the Naval Museum where there is a model of the first submarine in the world, invented by Isaac Peral, born in Cartagena and launched in 1888.
If you also visit this beautiful city in September you will have the opportunity to relive history in a different, close and personal way. This is the festival known as Moors and Christians, which takes over the city for two weeks with recreations of the most mythical battles in the history of the city and where thousands of “soldiers” and “civilians” in historical costumes participate in plays and parades. Everyone dresses up and tinkles glasses in the fairgrounds (located in the soccer stadium) in one of the many tents.
It is also highly recommended to visit the museum and research center for scientists in the modern ARQUA building. The most outstanding exhibit is a treasure trove of 14.5 tons of gold and silver coins recovered from the frigate Nuestra Señora de las Mercedes that sank at the beginning of the 19th century.
