Alcalá la Real, a fortress on the frontier
Named by the Catholic Monarchs as "Key, guardian and defender of the kingdoms of Castile", Alcalá la Real is a city forged on the border, at the confluence of Jaén, Córdoba and Granada. A stronghold on a hill full of culture and stories to discover.
Discover the authentic city of Alcalá la Real by the hand of a certified private guide.
A lot to see
Alcalá la Real received its title of “Royal” from Alfonso XI in 1341; that of “City of John II” in 1432; that of “Noble and Loyal” from King Enrique IV and that of “Key and Defense of the Kingdoms of Castile” from the Catholic Kings. Its historical relevance is therefore unquestionable, and its location on the Cerro de la Mota, in the border territory between Jaén, Córdoba and Granada, gave it a privileged place in an era of permanent change.
Surrounded by olive groves, at the foot of the fortress and its walls extends Alcalá la Real, a city with narrow streets founded by the Moors, although its origins go back to prehistoric times.
To walk through Alcalá la Real is to climb its streets to find stately homes or churches on every corner, such as Nuestra Señora de las Angustias or Santo Domingo; it is to discover the Town Hall or the Fuente del Pilar; it is to navigate through History, with capital letters.
And, of course, it is to see the Cerro de la Mota, the heart of Alcalá la Real, and to imagine the busy life of its inhabitants five centuries ago. And to climb it and see the city at the foot and the olive and cereal fields surrounding the city. And imagine Juan Martínez Montañes or Antonio Tapia creating works that have remained as references of culture throughout Spain.
Imagine how much you can discover in a frontier city like this.
Let a certified guide show you Alcalá la Real as you could never have imagined.
